The trace element selenium is best known as a natural antioxidant1 that, working hand in hand with other antioxidants, protects our cells from oxidative stress. There are many antioxidants; why is selenium specifically so important? Our bodies contain a number of proteins and enzymes that rely on selenium.
These include glutathione peroxidase – one of the most important enzymes in our antioxidant network. As an enzyme cofactor, selenium is also involved in the regulation of thyroid hormones2 and, as a structural component of sperm, is important for male fertility4. Furthermore, selenium benefits our immune system3, hair5, and nails6. There are many good reasons to ensure an adequate intake of selenium!
How well-supplied we are with selenium depends heavily on the selenium content of the soil in which our food is grown. Unlike in large parts of the USA, the soils in southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are comparatively low in selenium. People here who rely on regional produce or follow a vegetarian or vegan diet consume less selenium than those who regularly eat meat and foods from selenium-rich regions.
Pork and poultry, in particular, often contain significantly more selenium than plant-based foods, as selenium-rich mineral mixes are frequently added to animal feed. Fish and liver are also considered good sources of selenium—provided they are not contaminated with heavy metals or other harmful substances. The same applies to Brazil nuts, which accumulate radioactive radium alongside selenium. If you want to prevent a potential selenium deficiency, you have come to the right place.
Thanks to its inorganic sodium selenite content, it makes selenium available much faster than organic selenium compounds and allows for direct incorporation into selenium-dependent enzymes. A single daily capsule ensures a reliable supply of 100 µg of selenium—highly bioavailable, pure, and safe. In addition to sodium selenite, each capsule contains 590 mg of glucosamine, a natural component of connective tissue, cartilage, and synovial fluid. We deliberately avoid glucosamine derived from crustaceans or shellfish, using exclusively plant-based glucosamine that is also ideally suited for those with allergies.
Our tip: If you wish to combine selenium with vitamin C, we recommend "Selenium plus Acerola Vitamin C." The simple reason is that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) reacts with sodium selenite to form an insoluble selenium compound that the intestine cannot absorb. The selenium yeast found in "Selenium plus Acerola Vitamin C" is different: it contains almost exclusively organic selenium, which combines very well with vitamin C.
